The elementary counseling program forms an integral component of our school's total educational plan. The overall goal of the counseling program is to promote and enhance student learning. Students' needs are addressed through implementation of a comprehensive, standards-based, developmental continuum of services. Proactive and preventive in focus, the school-counseling program assists students in acquiring and using life success skills through the development of academic, career, self-awareness, and interpersonal communication skills. Programs are developed based upon needs, interests, and issues related to various stages of student growth.
The counseling program provides both direct and indirect services. Direct services include individual counseling, small group work, and classroom guidance lessons. Classroom lessons deal with topics such as conflict resolution, anger management, friendship skills, bullying and teasing, managing stress, tolerance and study skills. Indirect services include coordinating school and community resources that promote students' personal growth, collaborating with members of the school community and outside agencies concerning the welfare of the students, and providing appropriate community resource referrals for families.
