What's Happening

Reading/Language Arts: Welcome to Journeys - 3rd Grade!  Our first unit is titled Good Citizens.  The recurring theme in these five stories is how people in communities help each other. Some reading strategies for comprehension include summarizing and story structure, predicting and making conclusions, identifying character traits and analyzing, Compare and Contrast, and Visualizing.

Don't forget to read every night and continue to log three nights of your reading in your reading log - due every Friday!

Math:  We have complete chapter one which focused on estimating and rounding, and addition and subtraction with regrouping.  We are currently creating frequency charts, pictographs, and bar graphs in chapter two.  Our next chapter- Understanding Multiplication - explores different strategies for multiplication.
PLEASE practice addition and subtraction facts!  Practice makes better! :-)

Remember!  You can access our reading series and our math series on line at www.thinkcentral.com
User names and passwords were sent home. There are practice games and videos on different concepts so check it out!

Science: Our first unit in Science is Matter and How It Changes.  We have explored solids, liquids, and gases.  We have  observed volume using milliliters and liters, and mass, measured in grams. We will also explore physical and chemical changes.

Social Studies:  Using globes and maps, our class identified continents, hemispheres, latitude and longitude, and compass rose.  Map keys and symbols were created on students' own maps.  Along with this unit, we read Flat Stanley and wrote letters to friends or family about our community, and asking they write back and share what their community is like!
